One Thing NOT to do on Your Next Trip to the Great Outdoors

Remember the saying for those of us who love to experience nature when we travel: “Take only pictures and leave only footprints.” Well, we have another piece of advice for responsible travelers – one you may find surprising. Social media has fueled a boom in “rock-stack art.” But now a crescendo of voices – from park rangers to indigenous communities – is asking everyone to leave the stones alone.

The rock-stacking trend, and its downside

They look harmless, peaceful, even. A few hand-sized rocks, stacked into a tidy little tower beside a trail or on a windswept beach. Photos of gravity-defying towers on coastlines, riverbeds, and national parks inspire imitation. You may have already built a stone stack yourself.

But that tiny “I was here” marker can ripple into real harm.

Around the world, a growing group of concerned experts stress that building stone stacks (also called cairns) damages fragile environments, erodes soils, disturbs habitats, jeopardizes trail safety and makes light of ancient cultural traditions.

Communities, conservationists, rangers and indigenous groups are responding: on Scotland’s Isle of Skye, locals dismantled hundreds of tourist stacks at the Fairy Glen to restore the natural landscape. In North America, volunteers in national and provincial parks regularly remove unauthorized piles.

Here’s why:

Erosion & soil loss. Stones help anchor fragile alpine and coastal soils. Removing them accelerates erosion.
Habitat disruption. Small animals and insects rely on rocks for cover and moisture.
Navigation risks. In landscapes where cairns are still in use as way-markers, fake piles can send travelers off course.
“Natural Graffiti.” Any human change to the landscape takes away from its natural integrity for the people coming behind you. Some compare the urge to mark where you’ve been with a stone stack, like people vandalizing buildings with graffiti.
Cultural disrespect. Faux inuksuit in Canada or casual piles near Hawaiian ahu can overshadow authentic heritage.

What stone piles mean in different lands.

Across cultures and countries, stacked stones carry deep, sometimes sacred meanings:

Canada’s Arctic – Inuksuit. Inuit communities have built inuksuit (singular: inuksuk), human-shaped stone markers, for millennia across the Arctic. These were used for navigation, to mark hunting grounds, or as spiritual and communal symbols. The inuksuk has even been adopted as a broader emblem of Canadian identity—famously featured in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics logo. Building casual stone figures risks diluting or trivializing their meaning and can be seen as cultural appropriation.

Scotland & Iceland – Cairns and Varoa. Traditional cairns historically marked safe routes across moors and lava fields. In Iceland, official cairns still guide hikers; creating new ones is illegal and potentially dangerous because they can mislead travelers. They became part of Iceland’s folk heritage, and many historic cairns are now protected as cultural monuments; it’s illegal to build new ones, risking misdirection and damage to fragile moss and lichen.

Hawai‘i – Ahu and Heiau. Indigenous Hawaiian stone structures, such as ahu (altars or shrines) and heiau (temple platforms), are sacred. Tourists stacking stones nearby can confuse authentic heritage features or cause unintentional disrespect.

Global echoes. From Buddhist stupas in Asia to wayfinding markers in the Alps, stone structures are part of long traditions.

Casual tourist stone stacks jeopardize the environment, vital wayfaring in remote areas and cultural artifacts with “vacation art projects…” or even “natural graffiti.”

Is there a better way?

If you’re drawn to the meditative ritual of stacking or interacting with nature, choose low-impact alternatives: arrange fallen leaves, trace shapes in sand, or photograph stones as they naturally rest.

The World’s Biggest Cruise Line Marks a 100-ship Milestone

It sails 21 rivers, 5 oceans, and all 7 continents with more ships than any other single cruise line in the world. And now, with the naming of nine new ships in one fell swoop, Viking has marked another milestone: the inauguration of its 100th ship!

During a simultaneous ceremony that spanned six countries, the river, ocean and expedition cruise line launched nine new river ships. The main celebration took place in Basel, Switzerland, on the Rhine River on board the Viking Honir, and was connected virtually to the eight other new ships located across five additional countries.

Of the nine just-inaugurated river ships that put Viking over the 100-ship mark:

the Viking Annar, the Viking Dagur, the Viking Eldir and the Viking Honir will sail Viking’s most popular itineraries along the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers;
the Viking Nerthus will sail France’s Seine River;
the Viking Gyda, Portugal’s Douro River;
the Viking Tonle will sail the Mekong River in Asia, while
the two other new ships named in the simultaneous ceremony —the Viking Thoth and the Viking Amun—sail the Nile River.

The nine ships were docked in their respective cruising destinations around the world, and connected virtually for the event. At the ceremony, Viking’s Chairman and CEO, Torstein Hagen, said, “We have always been quite a bit different from others in the travel industry—we like to be contrarian. Over the last 28 years, we have grown from four ships to more than 100—a fleet size that no other line has achieved—and we have done so because of our innovative approach. First, we modernized river voyages; then we reinvented ocean voyages and perfected the expedition experience.”

Renowned for its mantra of ‘no children and no casinos’, Viking says all of its river, ocean and expedition cruises are designed for ‘curious travelers with interests in science, history, culture and cuisine.’ Chairman and CEO Torstein Hagen often says Viking offers experiences ‘For The Thinking Person.’ In its over quarter of a century in business, travelers have come to agree: Viking has more than 450 awards to its name, including being simultaneously rated top cruise line for rivers and oceans five years in a row by one publication, and “World’s Best” by another – the only cruise line to be the recipient of those awards at the same time.

Scenic Announces New Class of Luxury Expedition Ship with Pre-Release Pricing

Scenic Group has announced the launch of Scenic Ikon, a new class of ‘Discovery Yachts’- and the opening of bookings at special pre-release pricing. Scenic Ikon joins the luxury cruise line’s ocean fleet – currently Scenic Eclipse I and II - in polar waters and its primary base of the Mediterranean, beginning in spring of 2028.

Three years in development, Scenic Ikon is slightly bigger than the Eclipse class of ships, accommodating up to 270 guests, with new features and amenities, while maintaining its ultra-luxury, all-inclusive

Cracking Down on Bad Jet-iquette

It feels like air travel is more turbulent than ever! From “gate-lice” crowding the boarding zone, to out-of-control kids, to disturbing incidents of “air rage,” inconsiderate and bad-tempered people seem to be even more numerous in the unfriendly skies.

Airlines and destinations are fining, banning, redesigning, and reminding travelers that bad behavior at 30,000 feet will have consequences. In 2025 alone, Canada’s WestJet, Ireland’s Ryanair, and the country of Turkey have all implemented new initiatives to restore civilized jet-iquette.

Are you “on board” with these new moves designed to make your next flight less stressful?

Ryanair — Fines, Lawsuits & Last Calls

The giant, low-fare, Irish airline is the mainstay for groups of ‘high spirited’ bachelor and bachelorette parties heading to cheap Mediterranean destinations and fans heading for pints and the party atmosphere at soccer tournaments in Europe. In 2025, it announced it would be fining unruly passengers about USD $675. Furthermore, it would sue offenders for costs if a flight ended up diverted. And it’s urging airports to limit pre-flight alcohol sales.

Turkey — Charging Aisle-Rushers

There’s always that person at the back who thinks they deserve to the first off the plane. But if you’re flying to Turkey, don’t even think about standing up before the aircraft comes to a complete standstill. Let alone opening your overhead bin. Turkey’s aviation regulator will slap you with a fine of about USD 70.

WestJet — Declining Reclining

Conflict-avoiding Canadian airline WestJet is addressing issues over seat recliners by simply taking the option away. New “fixed-recline” seats in economy aim to stop seat-back squabbles and preserve peace. Less tilt, fewer temper tantrums.

Those new initiatives are just the latest crackdowns on bad behavior:

Ireland — #NotOnMyFlight Campaign

Ireland isn’t joking when it comes to bad behavior before, during, or after your flight. In addition to Ryanair’s new hardline policy hitting unruly passengers in their pocketbooks, Irish airlines, airports, and police joined forces with a bold message: “Disruptive behavior won’t fly.” Posters, videos, and staff briefings reinforce zero tolerance.

American Airlines — Eradicating Gate-Lice

Digital boarding systems now flag passengers who try to board out of turn, cutting chaos before take-off and sparing gate staff the stress of crowd control.

India — Stow it! Preventing Flaring Tempers with a Shared No-Fly List

With one of the world’s toughest deterrents against unruly passengers, India has defined three offense levels, instituted bans up to a lifetime, and developed a national registry of flight hooligans shared and accessed by all Indian air carriers.

U.S. FAA — Zero-Tolerance Enforcement

When air rage soared during the pandemic, America's Federal Aviation Agency stepped up, pursuing thousands of cases and issuing record fines and criminal referrals to the FBI. Although things have calmed down a bit more recently, the FAA remains vigilant in reminding travelers: misbehaving or disobeying crew is a federal offense.

European Airports — Sober in the Skies

Across the EU and U.K., airports are tightening alcohol access and posting warnings at gates—‘cutting off’ passengers and problems associated with too much pre-flight tippling.

Avoid Being ‘That’ Passenger: the New Rules of Jet-iquette

We understand. Airport lineups, extra security measures, and crowding take a toll on all our tempers. You still don't want to be the one wrecking someone else's - or your own! holiday. Here are some tips:

Board with your zone and don’t jump the lines.
Stow your carry-on luggage above your own seat.
Just don't recline your seat.
Stay seated until the crew says otherwise.
Check your temper as well as your bags.
Parents, come prepared! Keep kids entertained and in their seats.
Dry in the sky: You don’t have to avoid all alcohol, although it’s especially dehydrating in the air. But keep the big celebrations for your destination.
And of course: Follow crew instructions, always.

This Year’s European Christmas Capital is…

Rekindle your love of Christmas traveling to the official – yes, official! - European Christmas capital. Each year, the Christmas Cities Network, with support from the European Parliament, designates a different European Christmas capital, recognizing how that destination brings the local essence of the celebration to life for residents and visitors.

In 2025, the European Christmas Capital is Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania, one of the Baltic countries in north-eastern Europe.

You may think of some of the more famous Christmas destinations – often associated with their Christmas markets, like Nuremberg, Germany, with its mother of all Christmas markets, Strasbourg, France, the largest and oldest in that country, or grand, imperial Vienna, which are all visited by Danube and Rhine River cruises and land travelers alike. Cities like London and Paris are known for their epic lights, shopping and holiday displays. And of course, the religious pilgrimage destinations - like Rome for a Mass or the Pope’s Christmas message – are perennial favorites.

A visit to one of the European Christmas Capitals can not only connect you to favorite and new local traditions, but it can also give you a quieter celebration than the marquee destinations. At Vilius’ celebrations, locals outnumber tourists, and visitors can discover living local traditions that date back to the country’s pagan times.

“I invite everyone to rediscover that sense of wonder and curiosity, as if you were five years old again. It will also be a wonderful opportunity to learn about Lithuanian holiday traditions and sample some seasonal delicacies, including curd doughnuts, sea buckthorn tea, and hot beer,” said Audrius Vainonis, the Lithuanian Santa Claus at the gathering of Santas in Vilnius (pictured, top.)

The official holiday season in Vilnius begins on November 29 with the lighting of the city’s main Christmas Tree in Cathedral Square. Christmas markets, a sparkling Old Town, and even more festive events will keep the Christmas spirit going strong for over a month.

Christmas Day itself is coming early to Vilnius, which is establishing a new tradition of celebrating Christmas Day twice – with the first “Vilnius Christmas Before Christmas” on December 13, 2 weeks before the big day itself.

Highlights of the special day and the entire season include

a special Christmas currency that can be spent on tasty treats across the city,
a free Christmas card postal service to anywhere in the world (simply write your message, add the recipient’s address, and drop the postcard into one of the special Christmas mailboxes scattered around the Old Town. Vilnius’ Christmas elves will take care of the rest),
a 200-strong choir singing Christmas carols in a singalong atmosphere on an outdoor ice rink,
a square featuring 144 uniquely theme-decorated fir trees,
free guided tours with a festive theme, including the legends and secrets of Vilnius, how the nobility celebrated Christmas, and unique holiday traditions, and
Christmas-themed trains running through the holiday period (pictured below).

City organizers hope these experiences help visitors reconnect with their magical childhood holiday memories – and establish some new ones.

You’ll have plenty of time to soak up the magic in the European Christmas capital. The holiday season will close on January 6 with the Three Kings procession from the Gates of Dawn to Cathedral Square.

Record-Breaking Art Installation Celebrates One of Jamaica's National Symbols

A 46-foot hummingbird sculpture has taken flight in Montego Bay, Jamaica. It’s the world’s largest – and celebrates the Caribbean country’s one-of-a-kind national bird, the streamer-tail hummingbird, found only in Jamaica.

While hummingbirds are found in many countries in North and South America, the streamer-tail, which is also affectionately known as the Doctor Bird for the resemblance of its long tail to the coattails of a 19th-century doctor’s frock coat, is found only in Jamaica.

In local folklore, the Doctor Bird was considered magical, with the power to deliver messages between the human and the spirit world. With shimmering colors that reflect the vibrancy of the country, the streamer-tail hummingbird is a source of national pride.

“This bird is a symbol of flight and resilience,” says hotelier Christopher Issa, who commissioned the work for his award-winning S Hotel Montego Bay. “Like Jamaica, it’s small but powerful. We wanted something super special — a landmark that inspires locals, intrigues visitors, and celebrates what’s unique to this island.”

Acclaimed Jamaican sculptor Scheed Cole brought the vision of a supersized streamer-tail hummingbird flying off the facade of the hotel to life. Built in eight massive sections and large enough to hold ten people inside, the sculpture is constructed of fibreglass, foam and sheet metal. The project pushed creative and engineering boundaries in Jamaica, built in eight massive sections entirely outdoors over three months.

Cole also created the dynamic welcome sign at Sangster International Airport and saw the project as a personal mission. “Every major work I do is to prove what’s possible here in Jamaica, and this sculpture shows we can create world-class public art right at home.”

The sculpture is already drawing visitors, photographers and locals alike. The gleaming installation captures the Doctor Bird mid-flight with outstretched wings, iridescent plumage, and a hypnotic ribbon-like tail, and is visible from far along the coastline.

There's Mo' to Mo' Bay

The giant hummingbird is more than an art installation. It’s a bold symbol of Jamaican pride and a symbol of the cultural revival of Mo’ Bay’s ‘Hip Strip.’

Gloucester Avenue, now renamed Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, runs parallel to the shoreline and is a famous destination for visitors with its shops, bars, restaurants and beach access close to the city’s resort area. Jimmy Cliff was Jamaica’s legendary reggae singer, songwriter, and actor, best known internationally for hits like "Many Rivers to Cross" and his starring role in the classic Jamaican film The Harder They Come. The 2019 re-designation of the street in honor of Jimmy Cliff was itself a move to re-imagine the area and the city.

The record-breaking Doctor Bird installation is part of S Hotel’s commitment to a broader cultural revival of Montego Bay and Jimmy Cliff Boulevard. It has also inaugurated the S Hotel Art Walk, a vibrant mural series celebrating Jamaican music legends, and has themed hotel floors honoring icons like Bob Marley, Usain Bolt and Louise Bennett.

All Aboard! New High-Speed Rail Routes Between London and Europe

Train travel within Europe – and to Europe from London via the Chunnel – just keeps getting easier and better. Eurostar, which operates the largest international high-speed rail network in Western Europe, has recently announced new routes that will tickle your itch to ride the rails. Its just-announced new destinations will be served by new trains, and highlight just how connected Britain still is to the continent, especially via the high-speed trains that whisk passengers through the tunnel under the British Channel to the mainland.

The resurgence in popularity of train travel in Europe keeps growing, with Eurostar seeing 19.5 million passengers in the past year – up 5%. The high-speed train company has ambitions to carry 30 million travelers annually, which seems well within reach.

The company is investing €2 billion in new trains, which will all be able to operate across its whole network. The new trains will operate alongside Eurostar’s current fleet, bringing its total fleet to 67 trains – a 30% increase.

Eurostar’s fleet of new trains will be in service from the early 2030s and is planned to operate three new direct routes, including two between London and European destinations:

London – Frankfurt, Germany
London – Geneva, Switzerland
Amsterdam, the Netherlands /Brussels, Belgium – Geneva

More immediately, Eurostar recently reinstated direct services between London, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, with a fourth daily service being added from 9 September, 2025 and a fifth from mid-December.

Eurostar’s CEO says the announcement is launching a new ‘golden age of international sustainable travel:

“We’re seeing strong demand for train travel across Europe, with customers wanting to go further by rail than ever before and enjoy the unique experience we provide. Our new fleet will make new destinations for customers a reality – notably direct trains between London and Germany, and between London and Switzerland for the first time.”

According to the company, a Eurostar journey on a current route from London to Amsterdam emits 80% less carbon than the equivalent short-haul flight, making it “a clear choice for the future of travel in Europe.”

It also touts the ease of Eurostar high-speed, rather than air, travel:

Seamless city centre to city center travel, with stations located in the heart of the cities where you want to stay
Comfort and space on board to work or unwind with wifi connectivity and onboard entertainment
Fast and convenient check-in - passengers are asked to arrive only 30 minutes before departure
Generous, free-of-charge baggage allowance with no lineups or baggage reclaim upon arrival - simply take your bag with you on board

Eurostar currently operates in five countries: the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Germany. The most popular routes in 2024 included:

London–Paris (+280,000 passengers)
London–Brussels (+250,000 passengers)
Paris–Brussels (+160,000 passengers)
Paris–Netherlands (+140,000 passengers)

Fleet

Eurostar currently operates a fleet of 51 trains in 4 models, ranging from under 400 to nearly 900 seats. Some models are dedicated to cross-channel routes, while others operate continental services.

Its new investment will grow the fleet to up to 67 trains.

National Dog Day is August 26 – during peak summer travel. Nearly three-quarters of pet parents travel with their furry friends every year on domestic and international trips, and there’s still time to plan your next getaway this season.

No matter how you’re traveling, bringing along Fido means extra steps to make sure your dog – and you – enjoy a relaxed, healthy vacation. And for many of us, those extra efforts to travel with our pet are worth it rather than the challenges and stress – on both ends of the leash – of leaving your dog behind!

Here are some of the top tips to make your trip safe, happy and healthy for you and Fido!

1. Plan Pet-Friendly Destinations

Not all destinations are equally welcoming to four-legged travelers. Look for cities, regions, or nature escapes with dog-friendly hotels, trails, and dining spots, like off-leash zones and public welcome of pets.

Especially if you’re crossing international borders, verify your vet check-up, vaccination, and documentation obligations to avoid being turned back or worse – having your dog go through mandatory quarantine.

Last year, we shared new policies for all dogs entering the US, whether visiting from outside the country, or returning home to the US after a trip abroad. Make sure you meet all requirements for any destination!

2. Check Pet Policies in Advance

Before booking transportation or accommodation, confirm their pet rules – and any extra fees you’ll incur. Airlines and trains often have weight limits, carrier requirements, and paperwork for travel. Hotels may have size restrictions or additional cleaning fees—better to know in advance than face surprises.

3. Pack a Dog Travel Kit

Bring the essentials: food, treats, collapsible bowls, leash, waste bags, favorite toys, bedding, grooming supplies, and any medications. A portable water bottle with a built-in bowl is a lifesaver.

Make sure you check with your vet and airline rules about whether you should – or are permitted to – give your dog medication to calm/ sedate them during transportation.

4. Prioritize Comfort and Safety

Even in a car, use a secured harness or travel crate to prevent injury during sudden stops. On flights, make sure your pet carrier meets airline regulations and gives your dog enough room to turn around comfortably.

Special Tips for Air Travel with Your Dog

Air travel requires more preparation than other pet journeys and can be more stressful for the owner and the dog.

Not all airlines are equal in their care for man’s best friend. If you have choices in airlines on your route, check the pet policies of each airline before assuming they will all treat Fido the same.

Cabin vs. Cargo: If your dog is small enough to travel in-cabin, book early—space is limited. Larger dogs often have to travel in the cargo hold. Make sure they will be in a pressurized, temperature-controlled area – ideally with human supervision during the flight. Some airlines promise that level of cargo care for your dog, and you wouldn’t want anything less.
Choose Direct Flights: Minimize layovers and transfer stress for your dog. Morning or evening flights can help avoid heat extremes.
Get Vet Clearance: Many airlines require a health certificate dated within a specific window of time before travel. Discuss with your vet whether sedation is appropriate (it usually isn’t recommended).
Carrier Comfort: Line the carrier with an absorbent pad and include a familiar blanket or soft toy. Your dog should be able to stand, turn, and lie comfortably. Traveling with two dogs? Some airlines will permit them to travel in a shared crate – if it’s big enough – to provide comfort to each other.
Exercise Before Boarding: A good walk or play session before check-in can help your dog relax during the flight.
Hydration Strategy: Offer water before and after the flight. Avoid heavy feeding right before travel to reduce motion discomfort.
Know Airport Pet Relief Areas: Many airports now have designated spaces—map them in advance, especially if you have a layover.

5. Maintain Their Routine and Exercise

Dogs thrive on familiarity. Try to keep feeding, exercise, and sleep times close to their home schedule. Familiar blankets or toys can help them feel secure in new environments.

Plan rest stops on road trips every 2–3 hours for bathroom breaks and a stretch.

6. Mind the Weather

Extreme heat or cold can be dangerous for dogs. Avoid midday walks in hot climates, provide shade and water, and pack a jacket or sweater if you’re traveling to chilly destinations. That’s also why, if you’re traveling by air, it’s vital to ensure your dog traveling in a climate-controlled area of cargo.

7. Keep ID and Documents Handy

Make sure your dog’s microchip details are up to date, and that they’re wearing a collar with your contact information. If crossing borders, bring vaccination records—rabies certificates are often mandatory, and insufficient proof can lead to mandatory quarantine.

8. Introduce New Experiences Gradually

If your dog has never been on a long trip, start with short journeys to build their confidence. Gradual exposure helps reduce anxiety during bigger adventures.

9. Respect Local Pup-iquette

Pick up after your dog, follow leash laws, and be mindful of others in shared spaces. Good manners make it more likely you—and other pet travelers—will be welcome back.

10. Include Fido in your Travel Insurance Preparations

But what happens if your travel plans with your furry friend get… derailed? It was like a room full of alumni. We all laughed at every reference to an inside joke or old story (Spoiler alert: Lady Mary sleeps with a house guest and is regretting it. Lady Edith, now an ally, retorts, "What, was he Turkish?") heartwarming on screen and in the theater.

Grand Ballroom: The Crown Jewel of New York’s Event Scene

The three-story, 1,500-person capacity space, with landmarked, curtained balconies, was completely restored and has technology that allows it to host performances from private events to Broadway-style productions.

The decorative plaster bas-relief medallion at the center of the ceiling has been maintained and refurbished.

Basildon Room

An exquisite example of 18th-century design, the Basildon Room has a maximum capacity of 190 guests and now provides a lighter and brighter space with modern infrastructure added to the ceiling’s existing charm and restored frescoes, lunettes, cornices, paneling and fireplace mantel, which were all imported from England’s Basildon Manor in Basildon Park.

Silver Corridor

The Silver Corridor is one of the most elegant spaces within the hotel, blending history and artistry in a way that is uniquely New York. Its significance lies not only in its architectural beauty but also in its functionality; the Silver Corridor links some of the most important event spaces in the hotel, such as the Grand Ballroom, Jade Room, Astor Room, and Basildon Room. Sixteen wall murals, originally commissioned for the first Waldorf Astoria and painted in 1897 by American impressionist artist Edward Emerson Simmons, were salvaged from the original hotel for the 1931 construction and brought back to life in the recent restoration. The existing geometries and reinterpreted original materials reinforce Waldorf Astoria’s defining architectural language and its status as a benchmark in global hospitality.

Jade Room

With double-height ceilings and windows flanked by marble colonnades, the light-filled Jade Room has been updated to accommodate functions of up to 420 guests.

Astor Salon

A backdrop to thousands of events throughout Waldorf Astoria New York’s history, including a 1933 concert featuring both Cole Porter and George Gershwin on pianos, the Astor Room has been restored and has a maximum capacity of 420. The room now brings in more natural light and features beautiful columns, which were uncovered during the restoration.

Event attendees can arrive via three entrances, including a discreet porte-cochère on 49th Street between Lexington Avenue and Park Avenue – the only hotel porte-cochère available in Manhattan – or via Park Avenue or Lexington Avenue between 49th and 50th streets.

Solo travel keeps growing, and now there’s a river ship just for singletons to enjoy cruising together for the whole season! Riviera Travel is launching the first-ever cruise ship dedicated to solo travelers in 2027. Now there’s no need to wait until friends or family can join you on holiday – at any time of the river cruising season.

Lots of cruise lines, ocean and river, offer solo travel promotions and Riviera Travel itself even offers whole solo itineraries – more than any other river cruise line, according to the company. Beginning in June 2027, MS George Eliot will exclusively sail solo departures on the Danube, Rhine and Moselle rivers marking the first time a cruise ship has devoted its entire season to solo guests. There are 4, 7-night-long itineraries on Europe’s most popular routes.

Riviera Travel says its solo river cruises are among its most popular itineraries. So the next, natural step was to designate, not just itineraries to singletons, but a whole ship, calling it and ‘all-new luxury river cruise experience.’

Riviera Travel currently offers more than 20 dedicated solo departures each year, the majority taking place during the spring and fall, with every traveler enjoying a private cabin with no additional single supplement.

By adding a dedicated solo traveler ship to its fleet, Riviera Travel is giving solo travelers the opportunity to choose whether you sail during peak river cruise season or at other times throughout the year.

Travelers onboard MS George Eliot will enjoy Riviera Travel’s signature amenities and experiences tailored to the experiences and needs of solos.

Each guest will enjoy the comfort of your own double cabin— most of which feature a French balcony. The ship features communal spaces in the lounge, bar and sundeck. A welcome dinner and cocktail reception, as well as daily entertainment will let travelers connect with those who have shared interests, facilitating social connections for those who wish.

With no single supplement and an all-inclusive pricing structure that covers excursions, meals, and an all-day drink package, solo travelers can feel like they’re on equal footing with travelers cruising double occupancy.

As one of the more intimate ships in the Riviera fleet and originally designed for 160 guests double occupancy, MS George Eliot will accommodate just 68 solo travelers, creating an exclusive and intimate group.

At the same time, there’s an unprecedented crew to guest ratio of one crew member for every two guests, ensuring solo travelers experience the highest level of personal service. And each cruise includes the expertise of a dedicated cruise director and hotel manager and insightful daily excursions led by local guides.
